Some months ago, Dave goes to help John's band play at a local party. At the party, Dave finds a lost dog named Molly, and meets a strange man pretending to be Jamaican, who performs seemingly impossible party tricks, along with selling a drug called "Soy Sauce". John takes the drug, and begins apparently hallucinating. Thinking John is having a bad trip, Dave contemplates bringing John to a hospital.

Dave carefully pockets John's "Soy Sauce" before taking him away. However, after receiving a phone call from "John" (who is clearly present, and not on the phone), the two end up at the home of Molly's owners, "Big Jim" Sullivan, a fellow attendee of the party, and his sister and legal ward, Amy, whom Dave knows from high school. Amy fears Big Jim is dead after not returning from the party. Not knowing what else to do, and wanting to put the whole episode behind them, John and Dave return to their jobs at the video store. At work, Dave is bitten by the suddenly animate Soy Sauce.

The drug expands Dave's knowledge to superhuman levels and dumps him in various alternate universes before being returned to the present. Dave is arrested and brought to the police station, and questioned by Detective Appleton, who is investigating bizarre, gruesome events that killed several people who attended the party John and Dave were at.

Dave informed John is dead, but after being nearly killed by a possessed cop, Dave receives another impossible phone call from an alive John, who leads him to the fake Jamaican's trailer, uncovering the stash of Soy Sauce and a strange symbol. However, he is ambushed by Detective Appleton, who shoots Dave and sets the trailer on fire, having deduced the Soy Sauce is actively killing people around the town. A time- travel loop caused by the Soy Sauce is made (where Dave travels to the exact moment the bullet that shoots him) and inadvertently tampered with, causing Dave to survive the shot.

With the help of Wexler's girlfriend, Krissy, John and Dave track down the possessed Wexler after being nearly killed by various creatures made by the Shadow Men. Despite nearly being possessed, Dave manages to exorcise Wexler. The next summer, Dave notices that someone is watching him through his television set.
