Never pay a deposit or credit check fee before you’ve seen the place you’d be renting, don’t rent from someone you’ve never seen or met, and don’t ever give your bank account information, credit card number, or bank wire info over the phone or internet. Home repair scams are also likely to proliferate after a disaster like this one.
If at all possible, find a contractor through a recommendation, with someone you know to vouch for their work. And don’t rush into things—get multiple bids, set an agreement in writing, and make sure your contractor is insured, so you won’t be liable for any accidents that may happen.
Finally, beware of anyone claiming FEMA endorsement or certification—that’s a thing that just doesn’t exist. Beware of Shady “Charities”Unless you’re responding to a specific request, donate money instead of supplies—it’s often more efficient for aid organizations to buy their own materials than cobble together cast- offs. And watch out for scams—in the wake of a disaster, as grifters may try to prey on the very real sense of urgency for help. Donald’s insists on using Russet Burbank Potatoes, a potato in America that is unusually difficult to grow and requires a long time to do so. They further insist that their potatoes have no blemishes at all, which is difficult to achieve because these potatoes commonly suffer from what is referred to as Net Necrosis, which causes unwanted spots and lines on the potatoes. If the potatoes for sale have these markings, Mc. Donald’s won’t buy them, and the only way to eliminate this problem is through the use of a pesticide called methamidophos (Monitor) “that is so toxic that the farmers who grow these potatoes in Idaho won’t venture outside and into their fields for five days after they spray.”When Mc. Donald’s is ready to harvest their potatoes, they have to put them in giant atmospheric- controlled sheds the size of football stadiums, because they are inedible.
They “have to off gas all the chemicals in them,” which takes six weeks. I’ll let you watch the video for more information. You should have a hard time eating Mc. Donald’s after this, but that’s not a bad thing.
