Film reviews: King Arthur, Snatched and more Films Entertainment. PHKing Arthur: Legend Of The Sword is a cartoonish, clodhopping adventure yarn. King Arthur: Legend Of The Sword (Cert 1. A; 1. 26mins) Shaped in the gloomy shadows of Game Of Thrones and The Lord Of The Rings it serves up vast computer- generated swarms of extras, frantic storytelling, slithering snakes, dodgy dealers, black magic, energetic swordplay, laddish banter and a modest cameo role for David Beckham. There is little sense of romance, myth or magic in Ritchie’s film which feels more like a superhero origins blockbuster than your typical take on the noble knights of Camelot. It feels like three films rolled into one but never mind the chaos, just savour the spectacle.

Describing himself as “the bastard son of a prostitute”, Arthur (Charlie Hunnam) is raised in a brothel and seems to be a combination of the Artful Dodger and Batman. Related articles. Little does he know he is the son of King Uther Pendragon (Eric Bana), dispatched to safety as an infant when the evil Vortigern (Jude Law) seized the throne. Surly, sarcastic and sporting an accent that strays from John Lennon to East. Enders and back, Charlie Hunnam’s bad boy Arthur is the most reluctant of heroes. He discovers he has an inescapable date with destiny when he is the only one able to wrestle the sword Excalibur from a mighty stone.

Exposed as the King’s one true son he is now on a collision course with Vortigern. Fortunately a merry band of diamond geezers including Kung Fu George (Tom Wu), Rubio (Freddie Fox) and Back Lack (Neil Maskell) are around to help him, making the film seem like Lock, Stock And Two Flaming Arrows.

This hyperactive King Arthur is all about attitude as Ritchie races backwards and forwards through the story with breathtaking haste, the special effects set to overdrive, and stages some fairly exciting action sequences. It would be nice to enjoy a little quiet contemplation once in a while but that is definitely not his style. PHJude Law in King Arthur: Legend Of The Sword It is also a little strange that Merlin doesn’t figure in the story. Charlie Hunnam is a strapping physical specimen these days but the film never allows him to show much depth or charisma. Black- hearted villain Jude Law hams it up and seems to think he is in a Shakespeare play or, less charitably, a pantomime.

The Secret Scripture (Cert 1. A; 1. 08mins)If you were a big fan of Sebastian Barry’s novel The Secret Scripture then you might want to approach the screen version with caution. Veteran director Jim Sheridan has smoothed away all the rough edges and simplified the complexity of the original story. The result is still a handsome romantic epic but it lacks the emotional punch of the book. That’s no reflection on some of the cast, especially Vanessa Redgrave who is very touching as the elderly Roseanne Mc. Nulty. Locked in an asylum for decades Rose has been condemned to “live in her own little purgatory”. When the institution is sold to property developers, Dr Grene (Eric Bana) is assigned to determine her fate.

That’s the cue for a string of flashbacks to the Second World War when Rose (now played by Rooney Mara) fell in love with dashing RAF pilot Michael (Jack Reynor) and attracted the unwanted attentions of priest Father Gaunt (Theo James). A strong, independent woman is too much for a small- minded town to handle and her punishment is brutal. Melodramatic throughout The Secret Scripture comes off the rails with some last- minute twists that beggar belief.

VERDICT: 3/5. Colossal (Cert 1. Emotional trauma manifests itself in the most unusual way in Colossal: a weird hybrid of comedy, romantic drama and Godzilla- style creature feature. You don’t get many of those to the pound. Stuck in a rut, the irresponsible, unreliable Gloria (Anne Hathaway) returns to her hometown where she is reunited with childhood friend Oscar (Jason Sudeikis). Meanwhile Seoul in South Korea is being terrorised by a big scary monster rampaging through the streets. The two events seem unrelated until Gloria realises she has a very odd, personal connection to the creature and might be the only one able to save Seoul.

Colossal feels like a quirky episode of The Twilight Zone and is quite engaging but the lurches in tone are unsettling and the film is neither as funny nor as edgy as you might have hoped. VERDICT: 3/5. PHIt is a real treat to see Goldie Hawn back on screen after a 1. Whisky Galore! (Cert PG; 9. It never seemed a great idea to remake the beloved Ealing comedy Whisky Galore! The addition of colour makes for a pretty picture but in every other respect this is a poorer film.

YOU don’t expect subtlety from director Guy Ritchie which is just as well because King Arthur: Legend Of The Sword is a cartoonish, clodhopping adventure yarn where.

The men claim not to feel exploited, they are victims of a poverty that cannot be cured but you might think otherwise after watching a workplace that belongs to the Victorian era. VERDICT: 4/5. It is just a shame that the film isn’t better. Dumped by her boyfriend and fired from her job, Emily (Schumer) takes comfort from her planned holiday for two in Ecuador.
